I'm Just The Writer

Friday, October 31st, 2008

Writers are often are greatly surprised or disappointed by how their work is changed when it is adapted for the big screen. When Irwin Shaw’s World War II novel The Young Lions was shot in Paris in 1958, the Nazi character was played by Marlon Brando. Ever the method actor, Brando provoked an uproar by strutting around town in his SS uniform, even going into restaurants to dine. The thirty three year old star was unsure if the Parisians ripping his clothes were doing it out of adulation or disdain. Like most actors Brando wanted to be loved and he took his concern to Shaw that the Nazi be made sympathetic. “You just don’t understand the character”, Brando told the amazed writer. “It’s my character,” replied Shaw. “Not anymore”, replied the actor.

Some writers grow resigned to their voices being lost. George S. Kaufman wrote the screenplay for the Marx Brother’s comedy Animal Crackers in 1930. He attended rehearsals and realized that nothing Groucho, Chico and Harpo were doing resembled his original draft. He watched as the director Victor Heerman was driven to distraction by the brothers showing up late, placing bets on horses, playing the stock market and never sticking to the script. Heeman literally threatened to imprison them in cages till they behaved. Kaufman took it in stride falling asleep through much of the tomfoolery. At one point the writer woke up with a start and shouted,” Oh my God! I thought I heard one of my lines.”

A few years ago comedy playwright Neil Simon announced he was moving from Los Angeles to New York. In Los Angeles he was isolated in his car all the time and he felt it is was hurting his writing. Better to be in New York where you walked everywhere and met people. His departure may have been hastened by writing and showing up to the set of The Marrying Man (1991). He got to witness Kim Basinger holding up the production with tardiness, temper tantrums and her much publicized love affair with co-star Alec Baldwin. Simon was humiliated when she held up her copy of the script and stated for all to hear,” Whoever wrote this knows nothing about comedy!” The Odd Couple writer was too insulted to help fix the plot problems and the picture bombed.

Some writers are amazed to see their words turn into movie reality. When Margaret Mitchell (1900 -1949) was a young girl in Atlanta, various relatives took her on tours of Confederate battle sites, describing the Civil War so vividly that she imagined she was part of it. It took her ten years to write the text for Gone With The Wind which she scribbled on yellow legal pads, shoving them under her couch when friends would come over to visit her. The best-seller was turned into a movie in 1939 and Mitchell showed up in Hollywood for the fiming of Scarlett O’Hara (Vivian Leigh) nursing wounded soldiers at the Atlanta railway station. The author was overwhelmed by the sheer vastness of the scene. “My God”, she told producer David O. Selznick. “If we would have had this many soldiers we would have won the war.”

Some writers have strong ideas about who should play their characters. Novelist Tom Clancy was initially unhappy with the fifty year old Harrison Ford cast as the thirty something CIA agent Jack Ryan in Patriot Games (1992) and Clear And Present Danger (1994). He also berated the actor for suggesting plot changes to his stories. Ford angrily retorted that writers who sell their work to the big screen have to expect it to be changed, otherwise don’t sell it. After the two films did great at the box office, Clancy hinted that he would be willing to bury the hatchet to get Ford to star in the next Jack Ryan installment, The Sum Of All Fears (eventually made with Ben Affleck in 2002). Ford demurred by saying,” Maybe when I’m sixty.”

Sometimes stars are better off just following the writer’s instincts. Lou Holtz Jr. was disappointed that Jim Carrey brought in a team of writers to change his lighthearted script The Cable Guy (1996) into a dark tale about stalking. Despite Carrey winning the MTV award for best villain, the movie was panned by critics, led to several executives being fired at Sony pictures and became known in Hollywood as “The Straight To Cable Guy”.

Granville, a great summer resort

Wednesday, October 29th, 2008

Granville is often described as one of the most attractive summer resorts of northern France. This town, located in the region of Normandy, is constantly receiving visitors from the entire world as well as from France since it is ideal for relaxing and spending a great vacation.

The town of Granville has been considered a great summer resort and tourism spot since the XIX century. Although it always has been seen as a very beautiful spot and has received visitors from several different regions, it was not until two centuries ago that Granville started becoming the popular place it is to the date.

Besides than being famous as a tourism spot, Granville is also widely known as a fishing area. This way, the main resources of this town are based on sea related activities, and most of its incomes are based on the visitors its beaches attract and fishing activities.

One of the most attractive times of the year for visiting Granville might probably be during its Mardi Gras Carnival. Granville’s Mardi Gras Carnival is a festivity which has been traditional to the town for more than a century. This way, during this festivity the town receives an important amount of visitors who approach attracted by it as well as by the beaches and many other natural characteristics of the town.

The Mardi Gras Carnival of Granville has been celebrated every year since 1872, and it is, nowadays, an activity typical of the area. Originally, this festivity was based on the preparation fisherman would have to go through before going into the sea, and, although nowadays the festivity is much broader and includes several different activities, those roots are still at the base of the celebration.

Granville’s Mardi Gras festival is usually celebrated during the month of February. One of the most interesting and fun activities of this celebration are the one known as “the day of intrigue”. During the day of intrigue, the town inhabitants, as well as many visitors, wear masks in order to intrigue and trick the others while meeting or walking around the town.

Prevent Gum Disease before it Happens

Tuesday, October 28th, 2008

Contrary to what most people believe, the prevention of gum disease through good oral hygiene does not require a stiff brush, nor hard, vigorous brushing. In fact, such brushing may very well do more harm than good; stiff bristles and hard pressure can accelerate tooth wear, and in addition, inflexible bristles will not do an effective job of cleaning the area where teeth meet gum tissue – the sulcus, where most of the bacteria responsible for gingivitis accumulates. Soft bristles are much more effective in reaching into the sulcus and removing all traces of food and the bacteria that feeds on it.

It is worth noting that the brand or type of toothpaste you use is of very little importance; the major benefit is the actual mechanical action of the bristles moving over the surfaces of the teeth and gums. This said, there are some brands containing disinfectant additives that kill bacteria up to several hours after brushing. If you prefer not to use such a dentifrice however, there are some dental rinses that help in preventing the build-up of gum disease-causing plaque; your family dentist can most likely recommend one for you.

It is also important to clean between teeth, as the bits of food upon which destructive bacteria feed have a nasty habit of becoming lodged in these places. The most common method for accomplishing this is the use of dental floss; some dentists recommend certain types, such as silk, waxed, unwaxed, etc. This however is of little importance compared to the mechanical action of getting a piece of string into that space and removing any food particles.

Some people are sensitive to floss; using it causes a certain amount of discomfort. In fact, in most of these cases, your gum tissue will “toughen up” after several weeks of using floss, but if there are other issues that discourage you from flossing, some dentists suggest the use of toothpick-like products such as Doctor’s BrushPicks or Stim-U-Dent. These are actually very thin toothpicks that can be inserted between teeth for cleaning and removing food particles.

There are also dentists who suggest that some of the bacteria that causes gum disease and tooth decay resides on the tongue. There are some rather expensive tongue scrapers available at pharmacies, but you will find that an ordinary soup spoon from the silverware drawer works just as well for this purpose; just be sure to rinse it thoroughly after each use.

Finding a Quality Cigar Store

Tuesday, October 28th, 2008

The cigar shop of yesteryear has been increasingly replaced by a virtual version that offers the same wide variety of cigar brands, humidors and accessories, but knows no geographical boundaries and offers products at a fraction of the cost. Truly, online cigar stores have played a major role in the cigar boom of the last decade, revolutionizing the industry and making the purchasing of cigars cheap, hassle-free and anonymous.

Cigar stores both on and offline provide a large assortment of brands, from the inexpensive to the premium. Some of the most popular brands in the U.S. include the many varieties of Macanudos, as well as Montecristos and Nat Shermans. They come with a full range of prices that appeal to both the serious aficionado and the occasional, recreational smoker.

Of course, the most sought after type of cigar remains the Cuban variety, which makes them both more expensive and more difficult to find. Fortunately for cigar lovers, the onset of the Internet in addition to the relaxation of government sanctions regarding the importation of Cuban goods has made it much easier for U.S. citizens to enjoy the many Cuban flavors available for the serious smoker.

In addition to cigars, cigar stores stock various accessories available for purchase. The most common, and the most essential item is the humidor, which serves to preserve, protect and display a collection of cigars. Humidors vary greatly in shape and size, from a small box holding just a few items, to a full, climate controlled room, but each serves to provide the optimum temperature and humidity for lasting flavor.

Other products available include containers, cigar cutters, lighters and cases. Cuban Crafters, an online cigar store featuring premium cigars as well as a full range of accessories, even offers gift packages for cigar lovers of all kinds.

While some cigar aficionados still enjoy the occasional trip to their local smoke shop, online cigar stores are clearly the wave of the future and can be credited in large part for the dramatic increase in sales to the U.S. since the early 1990’s.
Cigars Info provides comprehensive information on cigar smoking, Cuban cigars, discount cigars, humidors, lighters, boxes, and more. Cigars Info is the sister site of Humidors Web.

Exotic Car Rentals

Monday, October 27th, 2008

There are probably very few drivers who haven’t at one point or another dreamt of parading around the city with the top down and designer sunglasses on, casually ignoring the onlookers who regard you with open lust as you cruise along in your extremely expensive, top of the line car. Unfortunately, for most of us mere mortals, paying the mortgage every month is difficult enough, never mind coming up with the dough to buy and maintain a fancy car. But there is a way to indulge that long-held fantasy, even if only briefly – by renting an exotic car.

Besides the range of middle of the range, functional getting-you-from-At-to-B type cars that car rental companies have on their books, many are now expanding into a growing market – exotic car rentals. Whether you are a businessman who wants to seem a little flashier while on that company trip, or simply want to indulge a dream, many people are exploring their holiday destination in a vehicle that goes well beyond the ordinary. Driving a two-seater sports car is neither practical nor cost effective for most of us on a long-term basis, but exotic car rentals mean that we can indulge ourselves for a special occasion, and return to our more practical mode of transport tomorrow.

Whether you are at home or on holiday, treating yourself to an exotic car rental is a great way to experience the life of the rich and famous. Roll up your tinted windows and enjoy watching people wonder which movie star or pop singer is lurking inside! Once you hire an exotic car, the last thing you will want to do is get out of it any time soon, so make the most of it by planning a driving route in advance. Whether you want to parade around the city twenty times, or enjoy a scenic drive, hiring an exotic car is an experience you won’t forget. So indulge your fantasy and take a trip in an exclusive vehicle – and don’t forget to take some photographs!

A Profitable Idea for Writers

Friday, October 24th, 2008

To say that I read a lot is perhaps one of the greatest
understatements of all time. I read chronically, obsessively.
Articles, books, magazines, newspapers, newsletters–you name it.
Whenever I am alone, if I’m not actually writing something, I make
certain I have something to read with me. I carry a large purse
precisely for this purpose; my partner, John, calls the one I hoist
on my shoulder these days “carryon luggage,” which should give you
some idea of its size :-) .

Although I have a great love for novels, most of my recent reading
involves topics that inform and/or inspire. Of special interest to
me is anything that can show me new ways (or new slants on old ways)
for writers to make a comfortable living using their skills, things
that I can share with the readers of my ezine, WriteSuccess.

One area that continues to look especially promising and profitable
for writers is ebook writing and publishing.

For readers, the convenience of ebooks can’t be beat; you can
purchase your book and be reading it moments later without getting up
from your PC or Mac.

For writers, benefits abound. Ebooks are relatively inexpensive and
easy to publish. You don’t need to shop around for an agent.
There’s no yearlong wait between having your manuscript accepted and
seeing it in print. And you can do some neat things with ebooks that
you can’t with the traditional print variety–include your own clip
art and graphics, add hypertext links right in the pages of your book
that take you readers to related Web sites, and other fun online
stuff.

You can’t just slap an ebook together and expect to find an instant
road to riches, however. Finding and developing a book on a topic
that people care about, and will pay for, is key. You will also need
to decide whether to self-publish, or go through an ebook publisher.
And the success of your ebook lies in how willingly, and how well,
you market it.

Probably the most sought-after type of ebooks, and hence the most
profitable avenue you can pursue, are the ones that contain information.
These run the gamut as far as content, from how to develop a gorgeous
perennial garden to how to balance one’s work and family life. If people
are passionate about the topic, and feel it will enhance their lives, they
will buy a book about it.

You say that this information is already readily available for free? You’re
right, much of it is. But if you write engagingly and well, and if you can
save people hours of searching and sifting through useless information in
order to find what will help them, then you can sell your ebook. Do the
research for them, include the best links in your ebook, and you have
something of great value to offer.

Let’s take a look at a real life example: Matthew Lesko. For those who
haven’t heard of him, he has put together over 70 books on how individuals
and businesses can find free US government money, grants and cash loans
to finance nearly any venture you can imagine. His books sell like hotcakes,
and I daresay he lives comfortably because of that.

Could people have found this information on their own? Absolutely. But are
they willing to buy Mr. Lesko’s books if it will save them hours and hours
of trial and error research? You bet they will.

If the idea of writing ebooks for fun and profit appeals to you, the absolute
best guide on the Web for how to create, publish and sell your own ebook
is “Make Your Knowledge Sell!” This ebook is so packed with information,
you’ll be biting at the bit to start writing before you’re even a quarter of
the
way through it. Even visiting the product’s Web site alone will provide you
with ideas. You can check out “MYKS!” here:
http://myks.sitesell.com/writeangles.html

Another *excellent* resource on this topic is Neil Shearing’s “Internet
Success Blueprint.” Written for Internet marketers, it is a
superb step-by-step guide to developing and writing ebooks that we
non-marketing type writers could definitely learn from. From
selecting topics to choosing an electronic publishing format for your
books–plus guiding you through the ebook marketing process–this
one’s about as complete as you’ll find online. Plus, it’s a fun
read. Read more about Neil’s book here:
http://scamfreezone.com .cgi/176198

If you love to write and want to make your living from it, I
strongly believe that ebooks are a fantastic way to go.

Here’s to your writing success!

Tips For Italy Travel

Friday, October 24th, 2008

Located in Southern Europe, Italy is a peninsula extending into the central Mediterranean Sea, northeast of Tunisia. When traveling to Italy it is important to remember that you are not at home, so always be respectful and conservative.

WEATHER AND CLOTHING

In general the weather is very hot and steaming in the dead of the summer. We recommend that you wear light clothing. Be sure to have sunglasses, hat and sunblock, as they are essential. Afternoon thunderstorms (brief) are common in Rome and inland cities, so you may want to consider bringing an umbrella. It is essential to follow dress standards (no bare shoulders or knees) and is strictly enforced in many churches, especially in Rome at St. Peter’s and the Vatican Museums and at the Basilica di San Marco in Venice.

SAFETY

Remember to protect yourself against purse-snatchers and pickpockets. It is recommended that you wear a money belt or a pouch on a string around your neck, both concealed. When you have to carry a purse make sure that is around your neck and tucked between your body and arm. A word of caution: “gypsy” children are widespread in Rome, are skilled pickpockets that are quick, and know more tricks than you do.

TELEPHONES

Since hotel tend to overcharge for long distance and international calls. It is best to make such calls from public phones, using telephone cards. For general information in English dial 176. To place international telephone calls via operator assisted service, dial 170 or long distance access numbers. The country code for Italy is 39.

If you are in need of additional information or have found what you are looking for. We suggest that you complete an internet search for additional information.
Have a safe and enjoyable trip to Italy!

Debt Consolidation

Thursday, October 23rd, 2008

Debt Consolidation

You may have heard all types of rumours about consolidating your debt. Some of the tales portray it as a quick route to clearing scattered debts. Other stories cunjure up a scary picture of increasing debt that leads inevitably to financial disaster.

The real situation, of course, lies right in-between. Consolidating your debt may or may not be the best way for you to repay your debt. It all depends on a wide range of factors: not just how much debt you have, but how much salary you earn and what type of debts you’re thinking about clearing, as well as your attitude to debt and to money in general.

There are, however, a few ‘dos and don’ts’ that should apply to just about anyone.

Think about the following debt consolidation dos & don’ts.

DO

Do consider toalking to a debt adviser if you’re thinking about taking out a debt consolidation loan. You need someone who can help you study your options, so make sure you talk to a debt consultant that doesn’t only offer consolidation loans. Maybe all you need is some advice on budgeting more effectively, so you can manage your debts yourself.

Make sure you think carefully about the repayment term on your consolidation loan, if you take one.

DON’T

Don’t keep on fighting if you really can’t afford your debt repayments. If you need help, ask for it – a debt consultant will be able to help you decide whether you need a professional debt solution, and if so, which one.

Easy Party Planning Tips

Monday, October 20th, 2008

Planning a party can be easy! Even complicated theme parties or surprise parties can be very manageable as long as you create a Party Plan List that has a pre-party time line of things to be done, things to buy, things to rent or borrow, people to contact, grocery shopping, and food that’s to be prepared, catered, or brought in by party guests.

Start Your Party Plan List Early!

No matter what type of party you are planning, from the simplest Saturday night get-together, to an all-day or all-night theme party, you are going to need a basic list of things that will need to be done prior to the day of the party—and right up until just minutes before the party!

As soon as you’ve set the date for your party, start making your list. It can be a real piece of paper that you write on, or it can be a computer Word document. You can use the free printable Party Plan List that accompanies this article (change the column headings to suit your party needs), or you can make one of your own.

Jot down the first few things that come to mind as they apply to your party: invite guests, plan the menu, decide on party games, and make a shopping list. If your party is going to be more involved, like a theme party or a surprise party, then your initial Party Plan List might include a few more things like decorations to buy or make, music, outdoor seating or lighting, and invitations that need to be emailed, snail-mailed, or hand-delivered.

Your Party Plan List can be as short or as long as it needs to be, and can include lots of details or just cover the basics. The whole idea is to have one central place where you can make notes for yourself and create reminders about what will need to be done, and when. For very detailed parties or elaborate celebrations, you might want to seriously consider buying a small notepad that you can keep with you wherever you are so that you can make notes for yourself as soon as you think of them.

Arrange for a Party Helper!

If your party is going to be a little more involved than just having a few friends over for drinks and conversation or a simple family-only birthday party, you should consider asking a close friend or relative to be your Party Helper. No matter how prepared you think you are going to be, as the party day gets closer, you are likely to feel as though that things are “out of control” and that you’re running around in circles and not accomplishing anything. A Party Helper can keep you “sane” during those last few wild days before the party, even if only to remind you that everything really is going according to plan!

Ask your Party Helper to be available the day before the party or the day of the party to help you with all the last minute things that are going to come up. Don’t be bashful about asking for help—but do remember that you might be asked to repay the favor someday!

Share the Party Plan List with your Party Helper, and make a special point to go over everything with him or her.

Work the List!

Now that you have a Party Plan List, you might want to review it on a regular basis. As things begin to get done, check off things that no longer need your attention, or mark done what you’ve done so far for any one thing on the list.

Once you have the basic list done, review each item on the list. Make your time line of what things need to be done and when. You can either color-code things (that is, everything that needs to be done on Monday before the party you can mark in blue), or you can number the list (that is, the thing that can be done now gets marked 1 and the thing that can only be done right before the party gets marked 999, or whatever numbering sequence you want to use). No matter what scheme you use, make sure that your list will help you do what can be done sooner and remind you of what will need to be done later.

Coordinate With Your Party Helper!

As the party day gets closer, stay in touch with your Party Helper and other friends and family who have offered to help with the party (by providing party items or taking care of errands) to make sure that everything is on track. Review your Party Plan List one last time with your Party Helper and discuss any final arrangements that need to be made. By this time both you and your Party Helper need to have a very clear idea of who is taking care of what.

Help Yourself To Be Prepared!

Remember the Golden Rule about parties: Everything you need to do will take longer than you think!

So, using your Party Plan List, do everything you possibly can ahead of time:

Any food item that can be prepared and stored or frozen can be made prior to the party. If you’ve frozen an item, note on your Party Plan List what time it needs to be taken out of the freezer.

For any food item that needs to be made the day of the party, think ahead. Can you pre-measure the ingredients and store in containers in the ‘frig or seal in resealable plastic bags? This will save you plenty of time on Party Day!

Remember that parties create TRASH and GARBAGE. Most people don’t plan ahead for this. Using the free printable signs that are available with this article, plan for trash, garbage, and recyclables (if that applies). If you don’t have regular large trashcans (or garbage cans that you can hose out and have clean for the party), then big cardboard boxes will do. Buy large trash bags. Put several in the bottom of the trashcan before you put in the trash bag that will be open. This way, as the trashcan fills up, you can bag up the trash and there will be another trash bag ready to go!

Accept the fact that it is likely that drinks are going to be spilled. Depending on what your arrangement is for drinks, whether cans of soda, bottles of various sport drinks, juices, and water, cans and bottles of alcoholic beverages, or party punchbowls, please think ahead about spillage and melting ice. Borrow plenty of coolers from friends and have certain types of beverages in their own coolers (all the soda in one cooler, all the bottled drinks in one, beer in another, etc.). Be sure that one cooler is kept for “clean ice” that people can use for drinks that are poured into cups. If the coolers are going to be inside on the floor, spread out beach towels underneath them to absorb the ice melt. Buy several rolls of paper towels, and have them handy to dry hands and mop up spills.

Don’t Panic on Party Day!

You’ve been using your Party Plan List and you’ve been coordinating with your Party Helper. On Party Day, all you need to do now is go by the list, and work at getting things done in the order that they need to be finished.

Hopefully your Party Helper will be available to assist you during the day. It might also be helpful to appoint other helpers to help during the party: replenish food trays, put uneaten food away before it spoils, take care of trash, help set up party games. Ask someone to restart the music if you are playing CDs on the stereo.

Don’t be afraid to ask several people to each do one small task during the party. They won’t mind, and you won’t have to spend all your time hurrying around, trying to do everything!

Enjoy the Party!

Now that you’ve done all the planning, finished the shopping, prepared all the food, and greeted your guests as they arrive, you can relax and enjoy the party!

Post-Party Reminders

After the mess is gone and the place is back to normal, please do remember to personally thank your Party Helper and all those who lent a hand in making it a successful event! And then offer your services as Party Helper for their next party…

Dare to Dream: The Vacation of a Lifetime In A Timeshare

Monday, October 20th, 2008

What are your chances of getting the vacation of a lifetime without having to save for a lifetime?

Renting a timeshare may be the answer to your dream vacation without having to make a long-term commitment. Many individuals are willing to rent their allotted timeshare week to you. Because of an inconvenient date or some other personal reasons, many times owners are unable to use their timeshare and are willing to sell their time period to you. With a little research either on the Internet, local newspapers or even visiting with realtors, you may be able to step into a dream vacation. Exotic places wait for you and your loved ones.

Timeshare companies and timeshare owners offer an alternative to the overpriced hotel and motel rooms. Virtually every year the costs of hotels go up. You can usually control the price tag of your vacations by utilizing timeshare resort rentals. Timeshare owners normally charge a set price for their rentals, and they do not need to increase prices to pay for labor and other usual expenses incurred by hotels. This keeps the price of a vacation rental on a more consistent level each time it is rented.

Timeshare resorts are located in incredible destinations around the world. Where have you always longed to go, but thought, “Wow, it would be too expensive to stay in a place like that!”? Mexico? Hawaii? How about Europe? Sure, those destinations can be expensive, but with a timeshare rental, you can get into incredible resorts for a fraction of the costs of a hotel vacation.

In most cases, hotel and motel rooms are undersized, have few amenities, and cost more than a timeshare rental. Typically when you rent a timeshare unit, prices are for seven nights, not per person. The units can sleep anywhere from 2 to 10 people. You choose the type of room and amenities you want! Studio, 1, or 2 Bedroom with kitchen, dining and living area units are all available.

No matter how nice the Hotel or Bed & Breakfast….. it still is just one small room! Why spend one or more weeks on vacation in a cramped hotel room and have the extra expense of eating out for every meal. Enjoy the spaciousness and freedom of a completely furnished resort condominium and save money all at the same time! And you will not be required to attend a timeshare sales presentation.

Put your vacation plans into motion and start your search for the ultimate spot you’ve been dreaming about. Whether you have dreamed about walking barefoot on an island or skiing down a mountain in another country, there is a timeshare available to you at a more than reasonable price. It takes only a little time to put the details together and make your dream vacation become a reality.

Timeshares are a proven concept for vacationers in many countries, and holiday planning is one of the top growing segments of the leisure time industry all over the world today. Why not begin your search today by perusing newspapers and travel magazines, or logging onto the Internet and searching for “timeshare rentals?” Dare to dream!
