After deciding to move to Siberia for a year to teach at the Chita State Technical University, I embarked on a travel odyssey unlike any other. In this entry, we pick up the last stage of the seven-day trip to get there.

Siberia As Seen From A Train

In preparing for my trip, I had actually done some preparation. As a common man, I know most of you female readers will find this hard to believe, but I swear it was so. Yep, I had read up on books, rented movies and so on. I was familiar with the tundra, the forest and the perma-frost of Siberia. And I was going to see it all during the three-day train ride across Siberia. Au Contraire!

Apparently, the untamed wilds of Siberia are a bit farther north than where the Trans-Siberian Railway runs. During our train ride, we saw no forests, no mountains and pretty much nothing. It was like taking a really slow train ride across Kansas. There just wasn’t much of anything to see. I wish I could tell you differently.

End of the Road

As I went to sleep on the evening of the sixth day of the trip, I was developing a firm conviction that I would never see Chita. Instead, it was clear that I was in some type of bizarre reality television series based on travelers being driven slowly insane. Amazing Race? Give me a break. As with oh so many things, I was wrong.

The Seventh Day

Brooms scratch. Particularly when handled by the Russian woman in charge of our car. As I shot up out of my bunk, I realized she was talking loudly and pointing more than a bit. The train was slowing down, but I couldn’t see much out the window because we were in trees and there was too much sun. Upon awaking Grae with a few whacks and a laugh, I finally recognized her saying, “Chita”.

We had arrived. After three flights, one angry customs official, a few embarrassing moments, way too many crackers and seven total days of travel, we had indeed arrived. At 5:30 in the morning.

Jumping out of bed, we each stuffed our belongings into our bags. Staggered out into the hall. Realized we both badly needed showers.

And stepped off the train into Chita. Siberia. Russia.

Japan, today, consists of four main islands Hokkaido, Honshu, Kyushu and Shikoku. There are minor island chains, which include Okinawa (also called Ryuku Islands) in the south, the Kuriles north of Hokkaido and the Izu Islands, which extend outwards into the Pacific Ocean.

The archipelago which extends from latitude 45 degrees north to latitude 24 degrees north has a variety of climates and environmental zones. A cool northerly climate characterizes Hokkaido whereas the eastern half of Honshu has a temperate climate and deciduous forests. Also characterized by a temperate climate is western Honshu and Shikoku but the forests in these regions are broadleaf evergreens (palms) and deciduous trees. Kyushu and Okinawa enjoy a sub-tropical climate and the forests are of broadleaf evergreens and oceanic vegetation.

Japan sees an abundance of rain especially in the summer months. Anywhere between 1000 millimeters to 3000 millimeters of rain falls in Japan depending on the location.

Japanese archaeologists (like archaeologists elsewhere) have divided the prehistory of the archipelago into a variety of differing periods. These can be compared with the Neolithic, Bronze Age and Iron Age seen in the rest of the old world. The Japanese have given each period its own name that reflects its own unique Japanese character.

The dates about to be given are approximate dates and different scholars have different criteria for when a particular age ended and a new one began. The Palaeolithic period is 50,000BC-13, 000BC (Use of micro-blade stone tools was characteristic of this period), The Jomon period 13,000BC-300BC (the characteristics of this age were pottery production and a hunting and gathering lifestyle), the Yayoi period 300BC-AD300 (characterized by rice cultivation and new types of pottery) and the Kofun AD300-AD650 (characterized by the construction of large burial mounds for elites).

Archaeology is still done on remains post-dating the Kofun period but it is in the realms of historic archaeology. The unique features of the prehistoric archaeology of Japan are the fairly late adoption of domesticated plants and animals and the absence of a formal Bronze or Iron Age. There is evidence that the Jomon people cultivated some plants but dependence on cultivated plants did not begin until the Yayoi period. This period also sees the use of bronze and iron.

As far as the cultural sequence stands for Hokkaido it is slightly different from the rest of Japan. For Hokkaido the use of pottery began later and agriculture does not begin until the Satsumon period.

Again the dates about to be presented for the cultural sequence for Hokkaido are approximate. The Jomon period 8000BC-300BC (the characteristics of this age being the use of cord marked pottery and a hunting and gathering lifestyle), The Epi-Jomon period 300BC- 3rd/7th century AD (characterized by the continuation of a hunting gathering lifestyle and a pottery tradition akin to the final Jomon pottery styles), the Satsumon/Okhotsk age 3rd/7th century AD-13th century AD (characterized by the use of iron and bronze and also some plant cultivation) and lastly the Ainu period 13th century AD-Present ( this has a mixed economy based on hunting and gathering, sea mammal hunting and plant cultivation).

It should be taken note that the Ainu are still resident in Hokkaido and the cultural groups preceding them are known only through archaeological record.

is easy to use and you won’t need to start a browser session to
submit a document for conversion to PDF.

1. Go to the web site and click on the Printer Download
menu item. that is displayed on the left menu. Download the
pdf4u printer and install using the default options.

Open up your Word document to be converted and select the pdf4u
printer as your printer.

2. Review your document and print using the pdf4u printer.

3. Once printing is completed a Document Submission
Software screen will appear. On this screen enter the email
address to send the converted PDF. Make any changes to the
document name as desired and click the Next button.

4. The next screen is for setting the Document Settings
and display resolution. Set the Document Settings to be
placed on the PDF and the PDF display resolution. For best
display results select the pre-press option for the
PDF Display Resolution field. Click the Next
button and your document will begin transferring to the pdf4u
web site.

5. When the document has completed uploading you will get a
File Transfer Completed screen to indicate the status of
your file transfer operation. If you do not have a subscription
to pdf4u the settings on the Document Settings screen
will be ignored and the maximum file size (as of this writing)
that can be uploaded is 45K.

6. Repeat steps 2 through 6 for each document to be converted
to PDF.

Whichever option you choose, document conversion to PDF should
be relatively painless. And since it appears as though PDF is
here to stay, everyone should make certain they have this
capability at their fingertips.

Sitting here on a very pleasant Sunday morning, sun coming in and window open, playing a mindless video game on my computer and daydreaming about paradox, like warm weather in February (rare in my part of the world) and wasting time with perhaps the most efficient tool ever invented.

Lev Manowich, a professor in visual arts at the University of California, San Diego, wrote an oft-cited book a few years ago called the Language of the New Media. In this book, he discusses the dynamics between the two dominant cultural forms represented in the new media, database and narrative: “As a cultural form, the database represents the world as a list of items, and refuses to order this list. In contrast, a narrative creates a cause-and-effect trajectory of seemingly unordered items (events). Therefore, database and narrative are natural enemies. Competing for the same territory of human culture, each claims an exclusive right to make meaning of the world.”

This dynamic tension between database and narrative is the paradox of Internet communications. The ability to store, organize and retrieve co-existing with the sum of all human utterances. On another scale, even when designing and writing for the simplest of websites, some reconciliation between the “natural enemies” must occur. A few examples are listed below:

1. Search Engines vs. Narrative – A recent (December 2005) article in Communication World by T.J. and Sandar Larkin points out that we use search engines, then hunt and click on web sites, to find “small pieces of data buried in big data sets.” During this process, our attention spans are short and our tolerance for reading narrative is low. This behavior would indicate that the Internet is database driven. But it is narrative that drives search engine algorithms and helps to determine the ranking of a site. So search engines are driven to find what users don’t want. Communicate information in a way that favors the user and the user may never find your site.

2. User Demographics vs. Language – Internet users tend to be among the best educated and rank among the highest income earners in our society. Over 90% of Canadians with a post secondary education are using the Internet vs. less than 40% of people with less than a high school education (Statistics Canada, Household Internet Use Survey 2003). There should be the potential for your website to communicate at a higher level of comprehension than other media. But studies show that site navigation steals mental resources away from comprehension. This limits the potential of narrative as an integral part of the site and relegates narrative to attachments.

3. Random Creativity vs. Social Conformity – Web sites are a dynamic media that could be, and perhaps should be, changed often, experimented with and used creatively. But researchers, like Fogg at Stanford, have found that people make very quick judgments of a site’s credibility based on its superficial appearance. So even though there is an expectation of random access to information, there is also an expectation of linearity, a narrative construct that will guide the user. This expectation often forces designers to conform to widely accepted standards and limits creativity. Often very boring templates have a better initial reception than attempts at creativity.

4. User Behavior vs. Branding – A Brand is a symbol of a company’s narrative, ideally instilling associations with favorable metaphors. Ebay is arguably one of the most successful brands to emerge since the Internet came into being. The name has become part of the lexicon of everyday speech, a traditional benchmark of brand success. Yet, last month, January 2006, over 14 million searches for Ebay were made in Overture alone. Grant it, they were using the brand in the searches, but given that they knew the name, one has to wonder why they searched at all. The paradigm of the Internet as a searchable database is perhaps changing the nature of a brand, an archetype of corporate narrative.

Communicators – wordsmiths, artists, designers, photographers, etc. – tend to have a strong bias towards narrative. Communicators are storytellers, who believe there should be a beginning, middle and an end. Speaking for myself, I have had a difficult time wrapping my mind around how to use websites as more than online brochures or catalogues, in other words, as repositories for narrative. Trying to think through the possibilities of blending database functions with the narrative, trying to ease the tension, has helped me scratch the surface of some exciting applications that I have applied in my teaching, my volunteer work, my marketing and my work with clients.

One practical way that I have found to reconcile the opposing forces, is to learn user friendly web sites for the functional database applications, feedback forms, shopping carts, photo albums, calendars, newsletters, polls, and so on. These are the things that make sites dynamic and yet are boring to implement. Getting them done as easily as possible, frees up time and energy for the narrative, the story telling.

When you are learning to swim, at some point you have to jump in the water. Once you overcome the surface tension, navigation is relatively easy. I hope pointing out some of the tensions that arise from the dynamics of the Internet, creates some new perspectives on this powerful form of communication that in many ways is still a grand experiment.
