How to Reduce Your Car Insurance Quotes

Friday, February 27th, 2009

With rising car insurance premiums, smart people everywhere are looking for ways to get discounts on car insurance. And why not? If it can put cash back into your pocket then go for it, right? Well, there are many ways to get discounts on auto insurance. Try to check if you or your car is entitled for the following discounts but remember that these are general price reductions, you have to inquire with your auto insurance agent if they offer them.

Individual Automobile Insurance Discounts

Person-related deductions are ones that depend on the driver’s own personal situation, status and driving history.

  • Going to Traffic School If by any chance you have recently been ticketed, you may attend traffic school either online or through a traditional setting to have your ticket expunged from your driving history. Indirectly, this will have an effect of lowering your monthly automobile insurance rates
  • Good Student discounts. Insurers know that students with higher GPAs are at lower risk of being involved in an accident. Therefore, they will usually offer price reductions on your car insurance.
  • Belong to a Professional Organization. Many times, if you belong to a trade or professional organization, you’ll be entitled to receive additional discounts on your auto insurance. This can include professions such as physicians, pharmacists, engineers, etc.
  • price reductions for senior citizens. People over 55 can usually receive deductions on their automobile insurance. Sometimes, you may also need to take a defensive driving course to qualify for the insurance discount. Verify with your local Department of Motor Vehicles to find out what courses are available.
  • Loyalty Programs. Staying with the same insurance provider for several years and maintaining a clean driving record will give you a positive history with them. Many times, the insurance provider will reward you with your loyalty with cheaper insurance rates.
  • Keep a Clean Driving Record. If you’ve not been involved in any car accidents or have had any tickets for traffic violations, you should be able to get your insurance rates reduced.
  • Multi-line Insurance Discount. If you have more than one type of insurance policy with the same auto insurance firm, many times you’ll also be able to get better car insurance rates from them.
  • Vehicle Based Insurance Price Reductions

Your car is a huge factor in determining how much you’ll be giving for auto insurance. Depending on the overall safety and other features of your car, you can get certain discounts on insurance.

    1. Car Air Bags. There are several types of airbags: front, rear, side-curtain, etc. The greater you’re protected, the bigger the discount you may be able to receive.
    2. Anti-Lock Brakes System (ABS). Some states require that car insurance companies give deductions to policy owners whose automobiles are equipped with ABS.
    3. Car Alarms and Anti-Theft Devices. Any type of add-on to discourage some individual from breaking into or stealing your car can also provide you with better auto insurance rates.

Planning Ahead for Vacation Emergencies II: Lost or Stolen Items

    Thursday, February 26th, 2009

While preparing for your Caribbean vacation, it is a good idea to come up with a plan that will help you avoid becoming a victim of petty crime, and a plan of action just in case your valuables are lost or stolen. Although most Caribbean vacationers anticipate fun in the sun, thinking through a game-plan in case your valuables are lost or stolen will ensure you’ll have pleasant memories to take home.

During your trip, most likely you’ll be carrying articles of some importance and value that are necessary for your vacation, such as passports, identification, cash or other forms of payment, and other items that if misplaced or stolen, could pose some inconvenience during your trip. There are measures you can take to prevent the theft of your valuables. And if your important items do go missing, you can do something about that, too.

    Theft Prevention

The most common crimes against tourists in the Caribbean is pick-pocketing and petty thefts. But by following some simple words of advice, you can avoid becoming a statistic by making it more difficult for thieves to abscond with your valuables. Consider the following travel tips to keep your possessions safe while visiting the Caribbean.

Don’t attract unnecessary attention to yourself by showing off large amounts of cash or fancy jewelry while on your Caribbean vacation. If you can help it, try to travel with as little cash as possible to prevent your money from being stolen or becoming lost without a trace. Credit cards and travelers’ checks are often better options while vacationing overseas because these forms of payment can be tracked and easily canceled if necessary. If your credit cards or travelers’ checks are lost or stolen during your vacation, contact your financial institution immediately. You should be able to cancel your missing or stolen credit card and track any purchases made after it was lost.

Try not to leave valuable and important possessions unsupervised during your vacation. If your hotel room has a safe, use it to stow valuables. Also, if you decide to go for a swim on one of your island’s beautiful beaches or are visiting public places including restaurants or casinos, don’t leave items such as wallets, purses, or other valuable personal belongings unattended because they can easily be picked up without anyone even noticing. Always be aware of your surroundings, and know where your personal items, including passports, identification, money and jewelry, are at all times. Thieves are less likely to prey on vacationers who look like they are aware of what is going on around them.

    Lost/ Stolen Documents

Not only can the loss or theft of items that worth a lot of money cause great dilemmas during your vacation, but also the misplacement or theft of your important documents as passports, visas, and identification or driver’s licenses can cause problems on your Caribbean vacation. These items are necessary to carry with you while traveling, but if they are lost or stolen while on vacation, you could face unexpected frustration on your trip. Even if you take preventive measures to keep your documents from being stolen, there is still the possibility you could misplace them.

If your passport or driver’s license is lost or stolen while visiting the Caribbean, immediately contact the island’s local police as soon as you can. Also, get in touch with the closest embassy or consulate to your home country. Once you realize that your passport, visa or I.D. is missing, it is important to notify the proper authority as quickly as possible to protect yourself from becoming a possible victim of identity fraud. Notifying the authorities is the first step to follow when your passport or other important documentation is lost. After you contact the authorities about your lost visa then you must apply for another one. You may not be able to receive a new passport immediately while in the Caribbean, so you may want to carry several other forms of identification with you just in case.

More than likely, you’re not going to be robbed while vacationing in the Caribbean, but it is always best to be prepared for the unexpected rather than being caught off guard. Hotels In Puerto Banus, Marbella, Spain

    Thursday, February 26th, 2009

Puerto Banus in Marbella, Southern Spain is one of the most exclusive resorts in the world but there are only five Hotels that are actually in Puerto Banus itself.

Fair enough, there are plenty of Hotels throughout Marbella to cater for all tastes and budgets but if you want to stay in Puerto Banus, right in the heart of the place, what choices do you have and what are the names of the Hotels?

First of a brief description of Puerto Banus, Puerto Banus is all about the Marina which contains yachts and motor boats, large and small. The Marina in Puerto Banus is lined with pavement cafes and restaurants that serve a mixture of traditional Spanish food and the more typical modern cuisine that we are now used to and expect.

Until ten years ago that was basically it but now the resort stretches back from “the port” and engulfs 2 large shopping squares, Marina Banus indoor shopping complex and the five storey department store, El Corte Ingles.

You can also find shops such as Armani, Dolce & Gabbana, Luis Vuitton, Hermes and Dior all within this small but select area.

    So where to stay…

The 3 star Benabola Hotel in Puerto Banus is actually an Aparthotel where you can rent self contained apartments, studios, one bed, 2 bed and 3 bedrooms but with all the facilities of a Hotel, such as daily sheet changes etc. Each apartment comes with a small kitchenette. The Benabola is in an ideal location between one end of the port and the popular Plaza Beach.

The Pyr Hotel in Puerto Banus is another Aparthotel offering a selection of Studio and 1 bedroom apartments with their own kitchenette. The Hotel offers all the usual things, Pool, café etc and is in a good location, just back from the Port and right by the shops, but if you are unlucky you could end up with a room that has road noise from the main N340 that runs behind the hotel. Make sure you book your room with this in mind.

The largest Hotel is the 4 star Andalucia Plaza Hotel, a 390 room residence with both an indoor and outdoor pool that is great for the summer and winter. Together with a gym and one of only 3 Casinos on the whole Costa del Sol. Again you could get a room with a bit of road noise but the Hotel is in an ideal location just on the edge of town. It’s around a 7 minute walk to the port and under 5 minutes to the beach.

Located directly next to the beach is the 4 Star Hotel Dinamar in Puerto Banus, like the Andalucia Plaza this hotel is on the edge of town but close enough to be within walking distance of everything. The Dinamar Hotel offers excellent facilities and is adjacent to the main sea front promenade that connects Puerto Banus to Marbella.

The only remaining Hotel is the 4 star Park Plaza Suites. Located overlooking both the Port and Plaza Beach this Hotel is ideal for those who literally want everything on their doorstep. Plaza Beach is also on your doorstep and over the peak summer season Plaza Beach has lively beach parties with top DJs and Dancers on a Sunday afternoon and Thursday evening.

For many people looking to book their Holidays the Hotels in Puerto Banus seem like an expensive option when you can find slightly cheaper Hotels within a fifteen minute drive but please bear in mind that as most people spend every evening in the Port area the costs of Car Hire, parking and or Taxis every night could exceed the extra that one might pay to stay right in the heart of Puerto Banus.

Gary Ingram lives in Marbella on the Costa del Sol and is the webmaster for Malaga Airport Guide that has over 300 pages of travel information about the Costa del Sol and Puerto Banus Hotels

How To Pick Those Exotic Vacation Spots

    Thursday, February 26th, 2009

I’m often asked how I find my “exotic” places for vacations. It’s actually pretty simple.

    You can do it, too.

Basically, I stumble upon them. That’s my secret.

The real key however, is that I always have my antennas up. I look, I read, I surf, I listen. Then most of the time, something just clicks and things fall into place. There’s no requirement for in-depth study. The trick is in keeping up the antenna.

First, look at the Sunday paper Travel section or supplement. This section is always chocked full of destinations, travel specials, deals and tips. Make yourself a nice cup of coffee or tea, sit in a quiet spot and scan the paper. Yes, just scan it.

Pay particular attention to the tiny classified ads that pepper the edges of the pages. These are usually low overhead, low cost tour agencies or consolidators that have great offerings major agencies do not. Most of them focus on specialty niches such as Scandinavia or South America. Most will also have website to poke around and all will have a telephone number for you to call if you want to talk to anyone. Best yet, most of them will list destinations you never even thought of . . . how do you think I decided to go to Rarotonga and found a great airfare deal to get there?

The big full page ads are worth a scan, too. While most of them are placed by airlines or top travel agencies, take the time to look at them. I rarely book travel this way but every now and then the offer is too good to pass up. I got a United Airlines package to Australia a couple of years ago that I doubt I will ever see offered again.

As you scan look for key words to catch your attention. Words like “special,” “deal,” “limited time” or “book until” will make you stop scanning and read.

If you do this for a few weeks you’ll be amazed at what you start to notice. Queuing up your brain to recognize deals and destinations comes with this simple scanning of these pages each week.

Another great source of information is your favorite magazines. As you flip through pages look for ad campaigns. Cities engage in tourist campaigns. Regions engage in tourist campaigns. Entire countries engage in tourist campaigns. Scan the pages for those glossy, colorful ads and just note what they are touting. Some campaigns I noticed myself this week are Napa Wine Country Fall Tours, Canadian Cities Weekend Getaways, Discover Thailand, and San Diego Tourism.

Another resource is your radio. What do you hear on the radio? Is your favorite station giving away Hawaiian getaways? Are they handing out airplane tickets to caller number 100? Where are they heading? Are you filing them away in the back closet of your mind? Anything can be a source of quick information.

    And, its fun to do!

So now that you are accumulating a library card index in your brain of destinations, prices and specials, what do you do with it?

You either play it safe or take a risk. . . .

    A Visit to the DMV

    Wednesday, February 25th, 2009

The DMV can be absolutely hellish. There are a million other things most people would rather do than visit their local Department of Motor Vehicles. Even with many states allowing the option to make appointments, you’re still guaranteed to spend at least an hour waiting at the DMV. It can be placed in the same category as waiting in link at the bank or the post office, but worse, because there is no way around it.

While you may not be able to help the amount of time you have to spend at the DMV, you can certainly make sure that the proper regulations are carried out appropriately, by applying for a DMV bond or an auto dealer bond. You have the opportunity to ensure that things are done at a high quality and professional level.

A friend of mine recently used the wait time at the DMV to his advantage. He had to renew his driver’s license, including getting his picture retaken and answering a few questions on the written test. He spent his wait time studying the manual: a perfect way to remember what you need to know for the test! Some of those questions are worded in such a way that they can trip you up. They make you second guess yourself, even if you have been a driver for years.

So You Need to Have a Website

    Tuesday, February 24th, 2009

You may have (or work for) a small business, run a youth club or other organisation and have decided to (or been asked to) build a website to bring it into the information age. Where do you start?

Well, you don’t start by commissioning expensive web consultants to do to the job for you! Consider doing it yourself – or at least part of the work. What you need to do can be divided into three stages.

    1. Designing your website
    2. Build your website using computer software
    3. Publish your website via a hosting company (you can host a website on your own computer, but this is an option for the more technically advanced)

    1. Designing your Website

If you know how to switch on a PC, have experience of using Word and Outlook you will be able to handle many of the software packages that are freely available to design and build your own website. However, even if you decide that building the actual website yourself is beyond you, getting some initial ideas on design together will save you spending too much money paying someone else to tell you what you want. After all, no one knows your business or organisation like you do!

Knowing where to start is often the hardest part. This article aims to give you some ideas. So, lets look at what you are going to have on your website first – remember you can start small, and then grew. Make sure you have the essential information together first, you can always add more detail later on. Your website should show who you are, what you want people to know about you, what you have on offer (either for sale or by way of facilities), where you are and/or how to contact you. You may start of with a list of headings such as:

    Organisation name

Short description of what you are and what you do

Where you are located (particularly necessary if customers or clients are to come to your premises)

Separate pages for each of the activities you carry out (or ranges of goods or equipment you sell)

    Prices (for membership or goods)

    Contact Details

Do some research – there will be other organisations similar to yours. Search Google or Yahoo and look at what information they carry, and how they are organised. Put yourself in the position of a customer – is the information you would require easy to find? If not, why not? Make notes on what you would improve about their sites.

Then think of yourself as the competition – what can you offer that is different? Are your prices or membership fees higher? Maybe you can offer higher quality. If your prices are cheaper you may want to focus on the good value you can offer. Even if you are thinking about a site for a youth club there what makes your organisation different from the others?

Remember that all material on the internet is protected by copyright, so you must not copy blocks of text or pictures and present them on your own site as your own work. You can, however, reprint articles such as this (as long as you credit the original author), and articles relevant to your business may be a good way of putting content on your site.

When you are looking at other sites look at the layout and colour schemes. There is a large variety in the way sites are presented – some are simple black text on a white background (probably the easiest to read and good for putting across large blocks of information), some are very colourful. You should consider your target audience – a youth club will want to appeal to the younger generation, and so may have a more bold use of colour. Sites to appeal to older people may be more subtle. Look at the gimmicks that are used – sound, pictures, movies, flash intros, web polls and RSS tickers (news feeds). These gimmicks are not necessary when you first build your site, but if you like the look of them file the information away – you may think adding these to your site will always be beyond you, but if you decide to take the step to build your site yourself you will be surprised at how soon you will become an expert.

    2. Building your website

So, having done your research, and having gathered the basic information about yourself, you will hopefully have come up with some ideas about how you want your website to look, what content you think you will need. What then is the next step? Well, you could now approach a website developer to turn your ideas into a website – but why not try this yourself? It will be a lot cheaper in the long run.

Even if you are unsure of your skills, it will cost nothing to give it a try.

Let’s talk about the software for a moment. Websites are usually mostly written using HTML which stands for Hyper Text Mark up Language (but you don’t need to remember that). You can use a software package such as Frontpage or Dreamweaver, and can build your website using HTML. But this is a lengthy process, and will involve you in learning all the code. Unless you wish to become a computer programmer you should consider using an HTML generator.

An HTML generator is a web building tool that allows you to design your website using similar functionality to Microsoft Word. It allows you to insert a text box, for example, together with images, and uses drag and drop functionality to enable you to place your elements where you want them to appear on the page. There will be easy ways to build a menu so that your visitors can find their way around your site, and, as you get more proficient, will enable you to add items like movies or sound to your page. The HTML generator will work behind the scenes, turning the page that you are working with into HTML code which can then be published. The beauty of the web building tools which work this way is that you will be looking at the page very much as your visitors will, and so can try out different layouts easily until you get the formula you think will work.

Many web hosting packages offer a free website building tool – but beware, the free tools on offer are very good, but you will normally be limited to publishing your site with the hosting company who provide the building tool. This is not necessarily a problem, but does mean that you should look into how much the web hosting package will cost you with that company before starting to build your website. It can be very disappointing to build your site and then find the hosting package is too expensive for you! Just remember, nothing is ever completely free – but that does not mean you cannot discover an excellent package! Vodahost, for example, offers a good value hosting package and an excellent web building tool with easy to follow online tutorials. For more information see the website http://www.webmasterproductins.co.uk.

    3. Publishing your website

As we mentioned above, you will normally be restricted to publishing your website with the same company that provided your web building tool.

Once you have designed your first page you can publish it on the world wide web. It is actually ridiculously easy to publish a website. With the click of a mouse your business will be part of the internet community. However, it is necessary to give a word of warning. You will publish your website for ‘Joe Bloggs Widgets’r'Us’, and will expect to find it when you look for it in a search engine – this will not happen! As in a ‘real world’ business you will need to do some marketing before the world will be able to find you. Look at other articles at http://www.webmasterproductions.co.uk to give you advice as to how to do this!

Finally, good luck and have fun! Website building is a great new hobby for the 21st Century which just about ANYONE can do!

Having designed and published a successful and acclaimed website in her own right the secrets of website design and publishing are now shared at http://www.webmasterproductions.co.uk

How to Design a Search Engine Friendly Web Site

    Monday, February 23rd, 2009

Many web site designers don’t design their sites for the
search engines. This is a huge mistake because they miss
out on attracting lots of free traffic. Your beautifully
designed web site may have cost you thousands of dollars
but it still needs to attract visitors to be profitable.

Here are 12 highly effective strategies for designing a
    search engine friendly web site:

    1. Research highly targeted keywords – do this even before
you begin designing otherwise you may have to go back and
clean up some of your web site design. Use the keyword
research tool, Wordtracker (wordtracker.com) to research
the most popular keywords that pertain to the subject
matter of your web site. Wordtracker will show how many
people have searched for that particular keyword over
several search engines within the last 60 days.

    2. Create a list of approximately 100 keywords or keyword
phrases that you can include within your web pages. After
having completed the above research, you should have found
the keywords that were searched on most frequently, but
only produce a small number of competing web sites.

    3. Write a paragraph of 250 – 500 words of text for the top
of each web page. Weave your keywords within this text
being careful not have them so close together that your
copy reads strange for your visitors. Aim to please the
search engines as well as your web site visitors.

    4. Optimize meta tags – the most significant meta tags are
the title and description meta tags. The keyword meta tag
has lost its effectiveness due to people spamming it,
however include it anyway as some search engines still use
it. Include your keywords within each of these meta tags.
The title meta tag should be a short sentence about the
purpose of your site. In your description meta tag, write
a sentence on the greatest benefit of your site. Your
keyword meta tag should include the most frequently used
keywords contained within your web page.

    5. Include Heading Tags – these can range form H1-H6
most designers will only use H1-H3. These tags separate
each section of your web page with subheadings. The H1
tag contains the largest font and is the most significant.
Within the descriptive text of these header tags you should
include the keyword phrases placed in the same order as
your keyword phrases that are within your keyword meta tags.

    6. Optimize images using the alt tag – write a short
description for the alt tag of your image. The alt tag has
    2 purposes:

    a) visitors can read the description if they can’t see the image.

    b) search engines only spider text (not images), therefore this
    could help your site’s rankings.

    7. Reduce image size – too many images or very large images
on your web page will slow down the loading time of your
web site. Make sure your images have a resolution of 72ppi.
Slice large images into smaller pieces with your graphics
    editor.

    8. Find incoming links (backward links) – web sites that
link to yours raise your link popularity. Search for web
sites that are compatible with yours and have a PR 4 or more
to do a link exchange. Write optimized articles and include
them on your web site. This means your site has a greater
chance of being indexed quickly as well as getting a boost
    in its rankings.

    Create absolute links (ie http://www.domainname.com)
from all your internal pages to your home page. This will
increase the number of links pointing to your home page.

    9. Use Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) to implement a clean
design throughout your web site. This will reduce the time
to implement a consistent text (or layout) style for your
web site. It will also enable you to easily update your
whole site should you wish to make any future changes.

    10. Place any script code into external files – when using
javascript (ie for swapping images on your navigation bar)
it creates a lot of code between the header tags, pushing
down the text that search, engines would spider first.
Placing the script code in an external file reduces the
    code to just one line.

    11. Insert the DOC TYPE tag at the top of every web page. A
DOCTYPE ( “document type declaration”) informs the
validator which version of HTML you’re using for your web
pages. DOCTYPEs are a key component of compliant web pages:
your markup and CSS won’t validate without them. i.e.

[!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01
    Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/loose.dtd"]

DOCTYPES are also essential to the proper rendering and
functioning of web documents in compliant browsers like
    Mozilla, IE5/Mac, and IE6/Win.

    12. Write clean html code – web site editors often write
extra code. This can increase the loading time of your web
pages. Check your html code by running it through a html
    validator (http://www.htmlhelp.com/tools/validator).

Once you have implemented all the strategies above, submit
your site to the search engines and get ready for lots of
    targeted traffic.

You now have built a profitable search engine friendly web
    site.

9 Keys to an Effective Website

Many small companies choose not to invest in a professionally designed website, although a well-designed Web site may raise the company’s level of professionalism and exposure – AND drive business and sales!

Make sure your website is working for you with the following characteristics:

Usability enables your users to get the most out of your site. This means that the
site’s navigation is consistent, clear and easy to follow; forms and links are in
working order; and the information on the site is current and answers incoming
    clients’ potential questions.

Findable: If people can’t find you, then they won’t buy from you. Make sure your
pages have text coded in HTML instead of embedded in the graphics, so that search
engines can read it. Put ALT tags on the images you do have – search engines look
at these, and they can improve your rankings. Include META tags in your code and
submit them to at least the major search engines. You can do this for free – ask me
how! Finally, find some online directories where your site would be a fit and add
your site to those directories. This is one more way potential clients can find your
site; having directories and other sites linked to yours can also increase your
    ranking in the search engines.

Legible fonts, sized for easy reading on different platforms and browsers. Also,
make sure your font is either significantly lighter or darker than your background
color or pattern, so that your site is readable for colorblind people, too. If you’re
using a background pattern, make sure that it doesn’t interfere with the text.

Cleanly designed, with graphics that enhance the website’s message, instead of
detracting from it. This applies to animations as well, which should be designed
    with a purpose.

Reinforces and repeats elements of your brand image, building upon the design of
your corporate logo and other materials and repeating your company’s message.
Consistency of your company’s brand is important across all media.

High-quality graphics that are optimized and saved in the correct format for their
content – JPEG format should be used for gradients or photos, and GIF format
should be used for images with areas of solid color.

Fast loading: Optimizing your graphics and writing clean code will ensure that your
users only wait a minimal amount of time for the page to come up. If people don’t
see your site quickly, they’re more likely to click away from it or not return in the
    future.

Cross-platform compatible: Make sure that your site looks the same on PC and
Macintosh systems, and on Internet Explorer, Netscape, Mozilla and all the other
browsers – that way, you’re not missing any of your audience! You’ll also want to
make sure that the site looks equally as good in older versions of the browsers – not
everyone updates their browser software when new versions come out.

Clean code will load fast! Well-written code is also less likely to load incorrectly in
different browsers. Clean code will also enable other web designers to pick up the
maintenance of your site easily if you decide to transfer those responsibilities to a
    new designer.

A well-designed website works as a qualifying agent and also provides information
24/7 about your business to all your potential clients. It is a vital resource and
marketing tool for doing business in today’s global marketplace.
