One of the Best Feelings

Friday, January 15th, 2010

One of the best feelings as a poker player you can have if flopping a full house. There is nothing quite like seeing it on the felt, or the virtual felt if you’re playing online poker, checking down at your hand again just to make sure, and smiling inside. At that point, barring some one in a thousand fluke, you are going to win the hand and the only strategy is to figure out how to play the hand to win the most money.

I think most players will check when they flop a full house. I think that’s generally a good move. There’s not much of a chance that slowplaying the hand will result in you losing, since as I stated earlier there is very little chance of someone else getting a hand to beat you.

If you do check, you are ideally looking for someone to bet, so you can check-raise them or just smooth call. How you play should depend on the other players in the pot. If you are up against loose or aggressive poker players, you could check-raise and probably get them to call it, or even re-raise you back. Against tighter players, you might want to smooth call their bet. Then check again on the turn or bet out. It all depends on your knowledge of the other players’ betting habits.

Far Too Much Generalizing in Poker Theory

Friday, October 16th, 2009

The reason poker is so hard is obvious; you’re playing against real people who are capable of making independent choices. Sure, there is a rational way to play poker. There are suggested ways to play. There are ridiculous ways to play. Every single player must be assumed to be capable of playing all of these ways, until proven otherwise.

The biggest fallacy in instructional online poker is making “if-then” statements. Poker is not all math, not all logic, not all controllable. Your opponents are an outside variable aside from the cards that you must always consider when you are making a poker decision. That’s why you can’t make a generalized statement about how to play certain hands.

I always limp with Aces. I always min raise with J-10 suited. I always play flush draws aggressively. These statements can never always be true. If someone has raised the pot, you can’t limp with aces anymore. More realistically what I mean is that what the action at the table is, should change what you plan to do with your cards. That’s why people generalize about position so often in poker. If you’re in late position and the pot is unopened, raise with xx% of your starting hands, etc.

But when you have been sitting at a casino table long enough to understand your opponents a little bit, you should be able to make a decision better than any generalization. Is my opponent tight? Does he think I’ve been bullying him? If I limp will it look weak, and if it does look weak, will he raise me, or is he the type of player that would love nothing more than to see a cheap flop?

So much of poker, surely heads up, is player vs. player, not cards vs. cards. Study your table and think about every hand, this way you can avoid making generalizations about how to play your cards.

Poker Wisdom on Losing

Tuesday, July 21st, 2009

When you sit down to play online poker, keep this old adage from an anonymous source in mind: “If, after the first twenty minutes, you don’t know who the sucker at the jeux de casino table is, it’s you.” That may be a painful realization, but a true observation nonetheless. When you sit down at a online poker table, you should observe the other players, identify their individual styles of playing and try to gain insight into their strategies and tactical execution.

In poker, you are playing the players, not just the cards. If you can’t identify some weak players and recognize which shark to avoid, then you are going to be the prey yourself.

Stu Ungar, a three-time WSOP Champion, summed it up in this way: “Show me a good loser and I’ll show you a loser.” When you hear someone at the table say something, “I know I’m beat, but I’ll donate” who then throws away more chips against a bettor, then you know there is weakness at the table to be exploited. Don’t fall into the trap yourself of playing sheriff and calling off your chips to create a showdown. By refusing to lose more chips and folding your cards, you exhibit strength and poker smarts. Look for the players who prone to weak play, and demonstrate confidence and strength whenever you enter a hand.

Your Fitness Program

Thursday, April 30th, 2009

To help ensure that you keep a physically active lifestyle, create a fitness program for yourself. A well defined fitness program will be fun and motivational, and it will provide both cardiovascular as well as muscular fitness.

Identifying your goals will help you define your fitness program. Are you trying to lose weight, strengthen your heart, improve endurance, gain strength, increase speed, or all of the above?

Your fitness program should include frequency and time of day. How often do you want to work out? You should plan on exercising at least three days each week. Do you prefer exercising in the morning, during lunch, in the evening, or some combination?

What types of workouts do you want to include in your fitness program? Do you want to run outdoors or on a treadmill? Do you want to lift weights at home or in a local gym?

Your fitness program may be as simple as going for a brisk walk three mornings each week and doing push-ups and sit-ups every other day, or it may be much more complex than that. It may be something you do entirely on your own, or perhaps you want to team up with one or more friends for accountability.

Your fitness program may include listening to music while you are exercising, or perhaps you want to enjoy the silence of the early morning outdoors.

Whatever the case, the fitness program is something you can define and tailor to fit your needs. It should be a program that encourages and motivates you to keep up with it. Exercise can be fun, and your fitness program should be fun for you.

Poker Oddities

Tuesday, February 10th, 2009

Poker is a game of many rules and established protocols. Some are obvious, but others only rarely come into play during unusual situations.

For instance, as the 2008 World Series of Poker, one player pushed a huge stack as if he was going to bet it, but before letting go, he pulled it back, then bet out only half of the stack. This caused a furor at the table, with his opponent visibility irate at the action. The dealer called over a floor manager who ruled that because the bettor had not actually released his chips, no bet was made, and it was legal to pull back his stack and bet out the smaller amount.

Sometimes a pot is split between two or more winners, and there is an odd amount of chips that can’t be divided evenly. In this instance, the extra chip goes to player seated closest to the left of the dealer button and was in first position to act. When players leave the table temporarily, the protocol about dealing cards to the empty seat differs in cash games and tournaments. Cards are not dealt to an empty seat in cash games, but in tournaments, the cards are dealt to the missing player’s seat, then mucked when it is the missing player’s turn to bet.

If a poker player goes all in for less that the minimum bet, any callers behind that player must still bet out the minimum amount even though the only bet on the table is less than the minimum. (This situation offers a good opportunity to isolate a short stacked player with a raise!)

Disregarding the Value of Money in Poker

Tuesday, December 30th, 2008

An inverse relationship exists in poker – the more a person has value for money, the worse of a player they are. Poker players are rarely careful shoppers, and are on average very generous people. Paying sticker price for a car to avoid the hassle, and contributing to charities are vastly different things, but poker players have been known to do both, and they each show an inherent irrelevant attitude toward money.

The ability to be able to bluff successfully, and to put in vast sums of money knowing that if you are called, you will lose, is something that can only be done by someone with no regard for the money. Online poker stars have often been the offspring of highly successful parents, who provided them with whatever they needed, and really never wanted for anything. Money is irrelevant to them, but they are highly competitive, and this has driven them to the top of the poker world. Someone who values money may stop moving up to the next level if he feels like making a certain amount of money allows him to live comfortably, and the possibility of losing that comfort level as the result of gambling scares them to a level in which they are paralyzed at the level they currently play at.

The negative side of this is, when some of these players go broke, they may borrow from someone who worked hard for the money, lose it, and spiral into a losing cycle of degeneracy where they prey on hard working people for stakes. This is a sad occurrence that is often perpetuated by the generosity of other poker players, and will keep the player stuck in a losing cycle, as he never will strive to improve his game.

Having an utter disregard for money is just one of the factors of a winning poker player. Just because you can lose money and not feel it does not mean you will eventually win. A winning player must also possess the analytical skills and bankroll handling skills, or they will wind up like every other broke player. Disregard is an important factor, but just one factor of many that contribute to a winning player.
