How Web Directories Help People Find Information
Monday, November 30th, 2009There are all sorts of strange Websites on the Internet today. People’s interests cover just about everything from how to repair toys and dolls to how to build a battleship. You may even find some specialty directories that help people find sites devoted to a single, specific topic. Web directories have been around almost since the beginning of the World Wide Web in 1993 but they have been overshadowed in recent years by major search engines. People seem to have forgotten just how helpful Web directories can be.
Take Directory Hand, for example. This specialty directory focuses on ceramics and pottery Web sites. You don’t want to be looking up the care and feeding of horses here but many hobbyists can find boatloads of information about ceramics, pottery, and related topics simply by browsing the categories or using the on-site search took. Directories usually review the sites they list before including, so unlike search engines Web directories tend to be relatively spam-free.
Another cool resource you may not have heard about would be Expo Central. This Web directory claims to have the lowdown on thousands of expositions and trade shows. If you want to know where your company can connect with other people in its industry, this may be the trade show directory for you. Of course, there may be shows that are not included in the list so you’ll want to see if there are other directories in the same field.
All that said, if you don’t find a directory for your topic don’t let all the hours you spend searching the Web go to waste. Quite a few services out there will help you build a custom Web directory where you choose which sites are listed and which sites are excluded. If you don’t like the way other directories pick their listed sites you can just create your own and build up traffic for it. People often flock to new Web directories that show promise.
